I hope you all enjoyed your level one classes!
In our last class, you finished your written test and then played 2 pieces for me. Everyone got great marks on their assessment, so good for you! When you were done your tests, you played Children's Music Journey games and had a Holiday treat!
I hope to see you all next year in January when classes start again for level 2.
Happy Holidays!

Great job in our last class before the holidays! I was so proud of you! You are all getting much better at remembering middle C.
We got to move forward on to level 3 where you learned about rhythm. Here are some helpful phrases to practice at home. You can either play the rhythms on middle "C" on the piano, or clap them. Can you remember any more? Try making up your own phrases to clap to.
"Ti-gers ne-ver make good pets"
"My Pa-rot talks a- lot"
"Swim Swim li-ttle fish"
"Rab-bits like to eat car-rots"
We heard two pieces composed by Beethoven this week: Fur Elise and his 5th symphony. Fur Elise is very melodic and easy to listen to, while we described his 5th symphony to be scary music.
Thank you for such a great class!
See you next year on January 4th!

Good job today.
I listened to some of you play a piece of your choice and I saw some great things!
Perfect hand position:(curved fingers in place) correct fingering, smooth legato playing. You are playing fabulously!
We learned something new today- Intervals. There are 2 types: Melodic and Harmonic. Once we know what type it is, we need to count the distance between the notes to find out if it is a fourth, fifth, sixth ect.
I had cards for you to match in groups to make sure we understand this. You will need to know this for your written test at the end of class 10. Starting in January, we will do some theory practice sheets.
This is what we covered today:

Today we spent some more time learning middle C. You are all getting much better at remembering where it is. You reviewed the Practice Room with Miss. Melody in Lesson 2 and went on the a new lesson with Mr. Beethoven in Lesson 3.
It is very important that we listen to the instructions of our teachers and don't click the green "X" until each lesson is over. Otherwise will won't be able to go on to the next lesson.
Next week we will finish Lesson 3.

NEXT WEEK IS OUR LAST LESSON DECEMBER 13th
At the start of the class we reviewed the notes on the keyboard and the notes on the staff with the Key Quest games. Some of us reviewed the "Bass or F clef" and some of us did the lesson on "The Grand Staff" in Theory Thinker. For the last part of class we played three games from the Children's Music Journey Program which I use for my younger students. One game was for practice with the notes on the keyboard, one for practice with rhythm, and one, to help strengthen fingers.
Remember- bass clef means left hand! You will know if a song is both hands if you see both clefs. You need to look carefully when you are reading the music to see which hand plays when.

Good work today!
I had quite an empty class for the last half. Next week I think you will all need to stay for the full class because it is our test and we have a lot to do.
Today you practiced your songs that I will be listening to next week. You are all in great shape to play for me! I handed the practice written tests back and some of finished/corrected missing answers. Test scores were really good.
I have sent home the written test for you to bring back completed next Wed. If you have any problems, I will be able to help you when you bring it back, before you hand it in.
You have all chosen 2 songs out of this list to play for me. Some of you are doing one from the list and one which you learned as extra.

Good job this class. For those that were away last week, you finished the lessons in Theory Thinker (2-1 Musical Rests) and then practiced the pieces that you missed. At the beginning we went to Key Quest games to practice note placement on the staff.
We spent the majority of class practicing our pieces for the assessment for our 10th class. You will each be playing 2 pieces for me as well as your C+ scale in the right and left hand. Some of you also finished some worksheets that I had given out last wee on note and rest values. I will mark them and give them back to you next class.

OUR LAST CLASS IS DECEMBER 21st.
Hello everyone!
This week we started reviewing Lesson 2 in the practice room with Miss.Melody to practice finding middle C. We then went on to level 3 with Mr. Beethoven.
Remember how to find middle C? You need to look for the two black keys and it is the note not in between but over to the left. We tried to find all the pairs of black keys on the keyboard and played them with our bunny fingers (fingers 2 and 3 - the thumb being finger #1)
We also thought of some other animals that make high and low sounds.
See you next week.

OUR LAST CLASS IS NEXT WEEK! DECEMBER 6th
I thought we learned some great things in today's class. We were on Lesson 11 where we learned that our fingers are numbered from 1-5 starting at our thumb. We also learned about the perfect hand position which is like holding a ball. You can practice how to hold your hands at the keyboard by placing your hands on your knee caps before raising your hands to the keyboard. We did some finger exercises on our legs to help strengthen our little finger muscles.
We also go lots of practice with the wood block today. I played a few rhythms and you took turns as well
You also learned some new musical terms: Treble clef, Bass clef, and dynamics p and f. p stands for piano (soft) and f stands for forte (loud)
Melissa
You finished level 5 today! Next week you will have Mr. Bach as your teacher. You also learned about our fingers being numbered so you'll be all set once you reach level 10!
To Practice at Home
Here is a game which you can play on your computer at home. You may need to download Flash Player. Click on the link below and then go to the game called High/Low. We haven't learned our notes on the staff to play the other games yet but someday you will learn these!

Hello everyone! Welcome!
I hope you are all enjoying your piano lessons so far.
We have completed Level 1 and Level 2. You now know all about high bird notes, low whale notes and middle C. Don't worry if you forget where middle C is, we will keep practicing!
Your teacher is Mr. Beethoven. Can you remember what I told you about him?
After learning in Mr. Beethoven's lessons, we go to Miss. Melody's classroom to practice what we have learned.
To end our lesson this week, we got to play the same two games from last week only this time we were to play the highs, lows and middle "C". You are doing a great job!
See you Friday.

Good work today.
We spent the start of class reviewing for our assessment test which is coming up in our 10th lesson. Next week I will hand out our practice written tests and you will be practicing your songs.
Here is what we did:

Hannah and Josh
You reviewed scales: G + and C pentatonic
Today you learned the F scale and F Pentatonic. Great work.
I gave you work sheets where you learned about roman numerals and practiced adding note values. Josh you learned something new about dotted notes.
Unfortunately, your computer was not working for the end of class and you were not able to practice your songs! I am sorry that this happened.
You two are learning so quickly! I am very impressed.

Here is what we did:
- C major scale ascending and descending
- Play backs
- Review notes and values
- Review rests and values
- Review intervals *remember to count the lines and spaces!*
- Using the treble "G" clef and bass "F" clef and landmark notes to find other notes.
(this can be easier sometimes than remembering all of our phrases)

Well done today!
We were on Lesson 9 today! We're almost at the end! In Lesson 9 we learned about notes that go higher and higher and lower and lower. Our new game today was called "Cliffhanger" It is a very short game which tests intervals going up or down. Parents can play this game at home by playing two note intervals going up in the treble clef or going down in the bass clef. The notes should be fairly close together-no more than 5 notes apart. Here is a game which you can play on your computer at home. You may need to download Flash Player. Click on the link below and then go to the game called High/Low. We haven't learned our notes on the staff to play the other games yet but someday you will learn these!
http://www.musick8kids.com/html/musicgame.tpl
At the end of class, we all got to take turns giving rhythms to the class with the wood block. You were great!
New
We learned today what the words legato and staccato mean.
We also learned the letter names of the notes on the keyboard. Here is the saying I taught you. "The notes on the keyboard go like this: C-D-E-F-G-A-B"
Practice at home
If you have a piano at home, you can do what we did today: Start on middle C with your right hand and play C, then a higher note and then an even higher note! Do the same with your left hand: start on middle C and then go to a lower and even lower note. These 3 steps are like a ladder.

NO CLASS NEXT WEEK NOVEMBER 26
Our new lesson this week was Lesson 9 "Higher and Higher and Lower and Lower"
There were no classes last week because of Remembrance Day so we started our class by reviewing Lesson 8 holding notes. Thank you for taking turns and sharing the keyboards so that you could each play each song all by yourself!
In Lesson 9 we learned to play notes with the right hand that go higher to highest and in the left hand notes that go lower to lowest. You all did great on this lesson!
Today I introduced to you two terms: Legato and Staccato. Legato means to play smoothly and Staccato is when you play detached. (like pop corn) Why don't you show your parents at home how we say legato and staccato? We practiced saying legato while waving our arms smoothly through the air. When we say Staccato we clapped very sharply "Sta- cca-to!"
Our new game this week was called Cliffhanger. To help us with this game I sang notes up or down " do -re-me" and you sang them back to me. Then , I played some notes on the piano and you told me if they were going higher or lower. We also played our live version of Bongo Girl. I played a rhythm, and you played it back on middle C.

For only our third lesson, we are in great shape!
For your first experience at doing playbacks, you did a great job! We reviewed the 5 note C+ scale in the R.H and learned the 8 note C+ scale. Fingering for this is "1-2-3 (thumb tuck) 1-2-3-4-5." Our thumb tucks under on the note F.
In Lesson 1-5 "Lines and Spaces Above Middle C" we learned how to remember the lines in the treble or "G" clef: Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge. We remember the spaces in the treble clef by spelling "F-A-C-E."
The songs that we did this week were:
Not all of us got through all three songs but you will get a chance next week to practice them.
I sent home finger number songs "Mary had a Little Lamb" and/or "Twinkle Twinkle" for you to try and play at home. Don't forget to review your C+ scale. Hope you have fun!

Good work today.
Today was not an easy new lesson and you are doing very well. In Lesson 9 Mr. Bach talked about playing "Higher and Higher and Lower and Lower"
It is important to make sure that we see the hand symbol and check when we play with our right, and when we play with our left hand. It is also very important that we play our songs and exercises all by ourselves. This way we will learn how to play with both hands at the same time. From now on, it will be routine, that we switch and take turns with our partners playing our exercises and songs. After our lesson and practice, you found a new game in the games room called "Cliffhanger"
You were all fantastic at playing our live version of "bongo girl" Thank your for volunteering to play some rhythms on the drum.
See you next week

Hello everyone,
Good to see you again.
Today in class our main focus was on learning musical rests and time signatures.
Here is a list of what we did:
Your play backs and C+ scale were great today! To familiarize ourselves more with intervals, we will be doing more practice using the Go Fish cards. Remember harmonic intervals are when the notes are played at the same time and are written on top of each other. If you were confused about time signatures I will be going over this as well as reviewing our rests next class.
I am very proud of what you accomplished.
Practice at home
Take the time this week to go to your piano and practice perfect hand position. When you play your scales, or any notes on the keyboard, try to keep your fingers close to the keys at all times. Don't forget to strengthen your left hand too!
Have a great week!

You are doing so well! Today we learned about rests
You went through two lessons today. The first being review of the bass or "F" clef:Theory Thinker 1-3 and secondly Theory Thinker 2-1 "Musical Rests" This is a fairly simple concept if we are comfortable with our note values. At the end of class I held up some flash cards to review our note values. We will be doing some more review on this in our next lesson.
Our songs that did were:
1. Old Grey Goose
2. Mary Had a Little Lamb for the L and R hand.
3. Twinkle Twinkle
4. Pop Goes the Weasel.
Those who a did hear play some of these pieces are sounding wonderful!! Keep it up! Our goal is to have a steady tempo and play these familiar tunes with ease.
John and Anthony, I have quite a bit planned for you in our next lesson. If you have the program at home review 2-1 "Musical Rests and 2-2 on "Accidentals"

Now that we have been introduced to the piano , we were able to start our lessons!
This week our focus was on note values. We learned about whole, half, quarter, eighth and sixteenth notes. Each lesson had an exercise after it for you to do. At the end of our lessons on note values "Theory Thinker 1-2" we had a list of exercises. Most of you were on ex. 6 or so.
We will finish these exercises and move on to the bass clef next week.
If you have the program at home we did
Theory Thinker: 1-1 "The treble or G clef"
and 1-2 "Bar lines and note values"
Next week I will be quizzing you to see what you remember about our lessons 1-2 on note values.
See you then!

Great to see you again this week!
This week was a very special lesson becuase you learned how to play piano with both your right hand and left hand at the same time!
We completed all of lesson 8 in the lesson room with Mr. Bach and in the practice room with Miss. Melody. We got to browse around the library and listen to some music by Mr. Joplin who will eventually be our teacher. We also spent some time at the end of our lesson in the improv room.
We learned some new musical terms in our lesson: legato and staccato
We had a little exercise where I would play something and you would tell me if it was legato or staccato. Do you remember which word means what? We will be going over this again next week!

We are moving right along in this class. You are doing great!
This week we learned how to read circle notes.
In lesson 4 we reviewed our songs and rhythms followed with Mr. Beethoven showing us something new. Instead of using birds and whales, we read notes! You did very well on this.
We could use some more practice with our rhythms.
I'm going to recommend that you practice at home if you can. Remember some of our sayings from lesson 3? "Ti-gers ne-ver make good pets"
This week, instead of sayings, we read numbers. You can practice clap backs with someone in your family such as "1 2 3+ 4" 1-2-3-4+" Have someone clap a rhythm while counting, then take turns; you clap your family member a rhythm for them to clap back to you.
Pieces composed by Beethoven that we listened to this week were: "Symphony no. 5" and "Sonata Pathetique" These two pieces have some angry Beethoven moments.
Miss Melody let us listen to pieces by Joseph Haydn: "March" inspired by a clock and "Surprise Symphony" which really does surprise you!

Will, you had another successful class today. You finished the rest of review on note values (eighth and sixteenth notes) and then went on to the bass or F clef 1-3 i-viii. You got through most of the exercises at the end as well! Way to go! Next week we are learning/reviewing reading the notes on the staff.

Our new lesson for the week was 2-1 Musical rests. If you have the program at home, it wouldn't hurt to go over these three short lessons again and practice the exercise at the end.
Our songs for today were:
To practice at home:
C + scale up to C (8 notes)
1-3 viii "things to practice"
2-1 i-iv

You are all doing so well.
Today we started in the practice room with Miss. Meloday in level 6 for review from last week. We all completed lesson 7, in which we practiced holding notes and our rhythms.
There were no new games this week but hopefully next week.
Taylor and Kennedy you finished the practice room with Miss. Melody in level 3 and completed level 4. Way to go! You had a new game today: "the bongo game" which focused on rhythm.
At the end of class we all did clap backs. First, reviewing ones with words from Level 4 and then with numbers counting "1-2-3-4" from levels 6 and 7. Taylor and Kennedy are already getting a head start practicing number clap backs and the rest of you were great and helping me remember some rhythm sayings from your previous levels.
You're wonderful!

Great work today.
Now that we have covered much of our lessons, I am focusing on us becoming very comfortable with reading notes. Today we reviewed our notes again in the treble and bass clef using the "key quest game"
We then reviewed 1-4 "The Grand Staff" I came around and listened to everyone play the exercise "Topic 8 Pg 4 Ex 1" that we learned last week. You all then practiced "Old Grey Goose" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb" Some of you who were ahead started "Row, Row, Row, Your Boat"
To end you got to try some of the games in Children's Music Journey program.

- where middle "C" is in the bass clef and treble clef
- what a skip and step (line to line, space to space, space to line) look like on the staff and then on the keyboard.
- Remember our sayings in the bass clef Lines: "Good Boys Deserve Fudge Always"
Spaces: "All Cows Eat Grass"

Hello,
You did very well today. To start off we reviewed our practice lesson with Miss.Melody in lesson 7. We then continued to level 8 in which we continued to learn about "holding notes" with both hands at the same time!
We were able to play our 2 new games as well as go over previously played games which you are all pros at by now. At the end of class we did some examples of clap backs. Here are some which you can practice at home. "1-2-3 + 4" "1+2-3-4" I am sure you can make up much more combinations on your own.
I think next week we will go into the library and practice some more play backs with Mr. Bach before going on to the next level.
Have a wonderful weekend :)

Good job this class. I feel that we accomplished quite a bit. Today we started right at 3:15 to make up for some lost time from last week.
We all reviewed our notes in the treble and bass staff. Here are the lessons:
1-5 notes above middle "C" in the treble clef
1-7 notes below middle "C" in the bass clef
1-3 Intro. to the "F" or bass clef
1-4 The Grand Staff
The notes in the bass clef are played with your left hand and with the right hand if you're in the treble clef. From now on, we should always check the clef of a piece before we play it. It is also important to check where our hand should be on the keyboard.
We also went into Piano Player today to learn some new songs. To start we did "Old Grey Goose" and "Mary had a little lamb" I came around and listened to these except for Noah and Mehran. I will listen to you next class. For most of you who finished these early, you got to choose any song from the level 1 category to try.
At the end of class we started playing memory with note value cards.
Have a great weekend!

Happy Halloween!
We had a new student join us this week, Will, who is learning Piano Suite. As well, Conn was also able to join us for those who did not know him.
Way to go this week! We reviewed parts of level 2 and moved onto level 3 this week in which we got to practice rhythms. You can practice clapping some of the sayings at home.
You can either play the rhythms on middle "C" on the piano, or clap them.
"Ti-gers ne-ver make good pets"
"My Pa-rot talks a- lot"
"Swim Swim li-ttle fish"
"Rab-bits like to eat car-rots"
There was also a new game this week- "The Bongo game"
We heard two pieces composed by Beethoven this week: Fur Elise and his 5th symphony. Fur Elise is very melodic and easy to listen to, while we described his 5th symphony to be scary music.
Will, you were amazing in your first lesson. I was very impressed with your dedication. I can already tell you will be great on the piano. I started you off with some basic introductions to the piano: posture, hand position ect. and then you went on to learn 2 songs: Topic 05 page 03 Exercise 01 " Frere Jacques" "When the Saints" You then preceded to note values which we will finish up next week.

Wonderful costumes! I enjoyed getting to see you all in your festive outfits. This took up a little extra time but we still learned quite a lot!
We spent the start of class reviewing notes on the staff in both treble and bass clefs. I think we all are getting much more familiar with this.
I felt that you were already to get into song mode this class.
These are which ones we did under "Piano Player Level 1" :
1. "Old Grey Goose"
2. " Mary Had a Little Lamb"
I came around and heard everyone played both of these. You were all fantastic in playing all of the correct notes. Now we need to work on keeping our hand in "C" position and keeping a steady beat.
See you next week.

After all our hard learning last week, today was mostly a review day for us.
We reviewed our note values with the memory game, talked about skips and steps on the staff and keyboard, and played "Key Quest" finding the notes on the staff.
We also started to do some ear training play backs. We will be doing 5-10 minutes of this every class to prepare for our assessment at the end.
After reviewing the 5 notes "C scale" which was under exercises in Piano Player - Theory I taught you the full 8 note "C scale" for those who did not know it.
The two songs we learned to play today were "Old Grey Goose" and "Mary Had a Little Lamb"
I got a chance to come around and hear everyone play it and everyone is doing very well.
Have a great Halloween and I'll see you next week.

We have two new students who have joined our class! Welcome Taylor and Kennedy!
Today in lesson 5 Mr. Beethoven and Miss. Melody helped us review everything we have learned so far focusing on reading circle notes and rhythm. Our new teacher for lesson 6 was Mr. Bach where we learned about beats. Learning about beats is a tricky thing, but with a little more practice we will all be little Beethoven geniuses. Our two new games for today were the "Princess game" and the "Train game"
Taylor and Kennedy way to go today!
We trucked on through levels 1 and 2 and started our 3rd lesson with Mr. Beethoven!! Next week you will finish practicing in Miss. Melody's room and move on to the next levels. I am so proud of how much you learned in your first lesson and hope that we are not going to fast. In our first lesson we learned about the high and low notes. In lesson two we found out where middle "C" is, and in lesson 3 we will be starting rhythm already! If you would like to see what songs we listened to in Mr. Beethoven and Miss, Melody's classrooms, check my blogs from the previous weeks for this class.

I hope today's class was a bit easier than our previous one.
We started today reviewing our treble clef notes on the staff. Today, we combined the lines and the spaces in our game. We learned more about the grand staff in Theory Thinker 1-4 and then worked on the exercises which followed this using BOTH hands!!! After this we proceeded to learn more about the bass clef staff in Theory Thinker 1-7. To remember the lines in the bass clef which is in the left hand we learned the phrase "Good Boys Deserve Fudge Always" For the spaces; "All Cows Eat Grass"
Today we learned our first song from Piano Player "Old Grey Goose" Everyone learned this very fast and I can't wait to listen to it at the start of our lesson next week. Next Monday after playing "Old Grey Goose" we will be reviewing the notes on the staff; skips and steps. When to use the right hand and/or the left hand, note values, and the C major scale.
Great work! Have a safe and happy Halloween!

Great work today once again.
Today we met our new teacher Mr. Bach. He taught us about holding notes in lesson 6 and 7.
We also got to hear the difference between an organ and a harpsichord. These two instruments are different than the piano. Can you remember why? We will discuss this next week.
We had two new games today which everyone seemed to have fun with: "The Princess Game" and the "Train Game". Next week we will finish up lesson 7 with Miss. Melody and move on to a new lesson with Mr. Bach.
Great job in your clapping rhythms and finding middle "C". You can practice some of the sentences at home either clapping or playing on middle C if you have a piano.
Here are a few phrases if you forget:
"Fish can-not go for walks"
"Fresh fruit is good for you"
"When is sup-per time?"
New Music that we listened to : Composed by Bach "Minuet in G" "Toccata and Fuge in d minor"
Do you remember "Minuet in G" by another composer? Beethoven also composed a "Minuet in G" which we heard in our very first lesson.
In the practice room with Miss. Melody we heard these two songs: "Polonaise" by W.F Bach and "Spring from the Four Seasons" by Vivaldi. Of the four pieces you heard today which one was your favourite?
I hope you enjoyed today's class and have a Happy Halloween!

Welcome!
You did great on your first day of piano lessons with musIQ club!
In our first class we learned about Mr.Beethoven who teaches us our lessons. After our lessons we go to the practice room where Miss. Melody helps us practice what Mr. Beethoven teaches us.
This week we learned about high bird notes played with our right hand, low whale notes played with our left hand, and middle "C" After our lessons and practices we all got a chance play two games which incorporated what we learned. We then learned a bit about improvising and went into the improvisation room. I hope you all had fun and I will see you next week.
Can't wait!

Great job today!
I loved how you all helped me set up! That was very nice everyone and I appreciated it very much. You all showed me today how responsible you are and I am very proud of everyone.
We started our lesson by going to Miss. Melody's practice room in level 4 to practice our rhythms and note playing. Then we went to our last review lesson with Mr. Beethoven.
Our new teacher for level 6 was Mr. Bach. We now know a little bit about Mr. Bach and I will tell you more about him next week. Next week we will start with the new princess game, finish level 6 in the practice room with Miss. Melody, and then move on. We also have another new game to play!
Thank you for a great class.

Superb practicing this week!
I am sure our last class felt like the longest so far, but I am confident that we are becoming concrete in knowing the basics to learn how to play the piano.
We covered a great deal today. Here are the lessons:
1-5 notes above middle "C" in the treble clef
1-7 notes below middle "C" in the bass clef
1-3 Intro. to the "F" or bass clef
You all seem to have a handle on the treble clef notes which you learned in music class. This is great! Some of you had some great sayings to remember our lines and spaces in the treble clef such as "Ernie Gives Bert Dog Food" For the spaces we can spell the word "F-A-C-E"
After learning and playing games to practice placing notes on the staff in Theory Thinker 1-5 and 1-7 , we started the exercises at the end of lesson 1-3.

Congratulations on all your hard work today.
We had some re-arranging of seats today for a few people. I realize that this may not be what we would prefer, especially if we were with our close friends; however it is better for your learning experience. It is very important that we try and pair ourselves with someone with similar piano experience so that we can all excel to our full potential. Thank you for being so co-operative and kind with your new partners!
Today was a long class for most of us but a very important one. We spent a lot of time drilling the notes on the staffs with the "Key Quest" games. Starting with the treble clef lines: "Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge" and then learning the spaces "F-A-C-E" We then went on to the bass clef lines "Good Boys Deserve Fudge Always" and the spaces:"All Cows Eat Grass" These phrases will come in handy at all times when we are learning new songs. We also played "Key quest" spelling words with the notes on the keyboard for a few short minutes.
If you have the program at home here are the lessons we did.
Theory Thinker: 1-3 "The bass clef" with exercises
1-5 "Lines and spaces above middle c" skipping exercises
1-7 "Lines and spaces below middle c" skipping exercises
Josh and Hannah
You also reviewed the notes on both staffs and then went on to :
Theory Thinker 2-2 "accidentals"
Next week we will review the notes in the bass clef and go on to :
Theory Thinker 2-3 "key signatures"
Theory Thinker 3-1 "other simple time signatures"
Once again great work today! Now that we are learning where the notes are, we will be able to start learning familiar songs!
